  The true mammoth, also known as the woolly mammoth, lived in the late Pleistocene period between 40,000 and 12,000 years ago, and belongs to the genus Behemoth of the mammalian order Proboscidea. The species is adapted to cold climates and is widely distributed in the boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including northeastern China.
